Founding Story

Telegram was founded in 2013 by Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai in Russia. Pavel previously founded VK, Russia's largest social network, which he was forced to sell after refusing to hand over user data to the Russian government. He left Russia and moved Telegram's team to Dubai. Telegram operates on a strict 'no ads, no VC funding, no cooperation with surveillance' philosophy, historically funded by Pavel personally. In August 2024, Pavel Durov was briefly detained in France, thrusting Telegram's moderation policies into the spotlight. Also in 2024, Telegram crossed 1 billion monthly active users, cementing its place as the world's fifth-largest social app.

3 Common Pitfalls Using Telegram

The three most-reported gotchas from the community. Read these before you sign up to skip the trial-and-error.

#1Blocked from mainland China

Overseas social platforms (X/Instagram/Discord etc.) are all blocked. IPLC-line airports (e.g. YunTu) keep WebSockets stable.

#2Shared IP = mass ban risk

Running multiple accounts on one exit IP is the #1 mass-ban trigger. Use dedicated-IP nodes + anti-fingerprint browsers (e.g. AdsPower).

#3China App Store lacks overseas version

X/Discord/Telegram are all delisted from China App Store. Switch to an overseas Apple ID (US/HK) or use overseas Google Play.

#4New accounts throttled in first 24h

New accounts get flagged if they post/follow/like heavily in the first 24h. Browse + follow only for the first 3 days.

FAQ

Telegram is blocked in mainland China; a VPN is required to connect. Chinese phone numbers can register, but accounts flagged for policy issues may be restricted.
Regular chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted (they're stored in the cloud); only 'Secret Chats' are E2E encrypted. WhatsApp encrypts all chats by default. For maximum privacy, Signal is the stronger choice.
